purple silk

The silk of this turban made me feel ladylike and elegant. In general, dressing up lately has been making me feel more refined and put together, instead of just wearing stay-at-home-mom clothes-boring! I like challenging myself to see if I can be creative enough to take an outfit to the next level. And feeling pretty all day is always a confidence-booster!

DIY denim vest

So I have a denim jacket (gap) a few years ago, but I barely wear it because I find it too bulky on me, especially the sleeves. I decided it was time for some updating. Again, this was very much spur-of-the-moment, where I just looked around my house to see what I could use.

sunday field trip

Yesterday, my loving husband said that he would take care of our baby so that I could enjoy some art. I went to two museums, Neue Galerie (neuegalerie.org) and the National Academy Museum (nationalacademy.org), and the colors of the paintings were sooo amazing.
At Neue Galerie, Gustav Klimt's paintings used patterns to delineate figures and backgrounds, instead of traditional lines and shadows. The famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer definitely had me entranced. In the gallery bookstore, I spotted a book about the backstory of the painting's subject, The Lady in Gold by Anne Marie O'Connor, which I am very interested in reading.

metropolitan opera

The dress that Coco Rocha wore, by Greta Constantine, just has the most amazing architectural details. Somehow, she makes underarms look pretty!

print wallpaper vs bright-colored shelves

As another artistic outlet, I love house decorating. Its such a fun challenge to figure out how to work with the space you have AND make it pretty. I have *some* experience with this, as our last apartment was a studio, as in there was no doors (except for the bathroom!), and I had to figure out to use every inch wisely. Just to add to the fun, it was me, my husband, and my baby (until he was 6 months). Don't worry, we have since gotten out of there. But it was a wonderful lesson on living clutter-free and creating a homey and inviting space. We even had plenty of guests for dinners, no joke.
Back to the topic, I really enjoy looking at house decorating blogs and getting ideas. In case you haven't noticed, I love bright colors. One idea for shelves I really like is white with the inside painted a fun color like this teal.

DIY jewelry organizer

Since we moved, my jewelry has been all mixed and tangled together in a wicker basket. I looked around other blogs' diy posts for some ideas for a jewelry organizer. I came up with this- it was a very spur-of-the-moment project. I kept changing it up and grabbing random things in my house as I thought of them. Best part is, I didn't spend a penny!

vegetable rice soup

I like to make thick soups during the cold weather, using rice or barley to make it cozier. Its super easy, and I let it simmer for a few hours while it thickens up. Here is what I made last night.

INGREDIENTS:
zuchinni
red pepper
frozen mix of cauliflower and broccoli
salt and pepper
onion
mushrooms
1 to 2 cups brown rice
olive oil
water
cheese (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Saute onion and mushrooms with olive oil at the bottom of a pot until tender. Cube zuchinni and red pepper. Add all vegetables and rice to pot and water to cover. Season to taste. Put pot on high flame until boiled, then low flame for a couple of hours, until desired thickness. Serve hot with a slice of cheese.

black tulle and plaid

I love high/low pairings and this outfit idea has been sitting in my head for years, but I haven't had the courage to try it.

mint and blue

I woke up this morning thinking of these exact colors on nails, don't ask me why.

I tried to create my outfit based on them.

I want to go to Paris

This post is a few days late. The night before this outfit, I broke my pinky toe- don't laugh at me! It really hurt! So I couldn't wear the shoes I wanted.

chicken stuffed eggplant

I had an eggplant in the fridge and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it so I adapted this recipe from here. My husband claims he doesn't like eggplant so I was determined to make something he would eat. In general, you should know that I'm not good at following recipes exactly. I like to get inspiration from recipes online, and then do my own thing. Sometimes its good, sometimes its not. This time, we definitely liked it.

crustless vegetable quiche

Quiche crusts aren't, in my opinion, too appetizing. This quiche has a lot packed into it, without needing the crust.

butternut squash pudding

This is something I've made a few times. Its good for when I want something sweet.

flapper dress remix

I noticed recently that my closet isn't so textured. So much of my clothes are cotton fabrics, and even if they aren't, I usually don't wear lots of textures in one outfit. Now that I think about it, textures are essential to making a statement and creating drama in an outfit. For example, the same all black ensemble can give two totally different vibes, based on the textures.

pink and orange

A few years ago, before colorblocking was a trend, I saw a skirt at J. Crew that had wide pink and orange stripes. At the time, I couldn't afford it, but the color combination has inspired many outfits since. Crazy that I still think about it!

Galaxies

When I saw this dress on Carey Mulligan a while ago, I fell in love. I like anything that has to do with the sky or outerspace: I love airplanes, the moon, and this gorgeous galaxy print. I would match this up with a cream turban. This look is intriguing and elegant.

I love how Carey wore red shoes. Metallic strappy sandals would look great, too, like these Steve Madden ones.

birdies on my head

I figured out a new way to tie my head scarf this morning! I saw this video a while back when I was researching how to tie head scarves. I really liked it but I needed to figure out how to do it covering all my hair. This morning I did it.

Here's how: take a long rectangular head scarf, put your hair in a bun, center your head in the middle of the scarf, pull the ends around to the back of your head and twist twice, then bring the ends back to the front of your head and twist twice again-you can move the twist/knot toward the side if you want, like I did here, or leave it in the middle-and tie the ends around your bun.

red to match my toes

I love to mix black and white with bright colors; here, more than one. This twirly skirt and bare legs makes me feel like anything is possible.

I also like experimenting with minimal makeup. Here I was wearing a little cateye and mascara.

First post ever

Welcome to my blog, the passionate turban.

I always loved to read blogs in general, because I like seeing what other real people do, whether its about fashion, home decorating, or mothering. I am currently unemployed and needing an artistic outlet, so this will be it! I was inspired to create my own personal style blog, specifically by The Clothes Horse, as she talked about her recent hair change and making style choices based on what you personally like, as opposed to pleasing other people. This has led me to think about my own personal style, and life philosophy in general, where I try to do my own thing...my brother, and I'm sure many other people, thinks I'm crazy. However, sometimes I am self-conscious and worried about standing out too much. But now I am encouraged to take more risks in style and life. I am looking forward to sharing ideas and hearing from readers.

So here I am and I hope you get inspired, too! Some more about me

selections from my colorful closet...it gives me so much pleasure to lie on my bed and stare at all the colors. I even like doing the non-white load of  laundry just because its colorful.
